Mock-ups and market samples

picWe are experts in the ‘origami’ of new product development! Whatever the concept, we work with various materials to produce a series of alternative mock-ups for early design assessment and marketing feedback. Our work includes the design of new blanks for carton-board products and fabrication with a wide variety of reel-fed and flexible materials such as films, laminates and filter papers.

Another valuable technology to support NPD is rapid prototyping. A 3-D computer model is used to create a physical model of the product in a resin-based material. This is particularly useful for injection-moulded products that have a number of complex features. ITCM supports the complete process from 3-D CAD model through to low volume production of samples suitable to distribute to key decision makers.

Producing mock-ups aids in the design-for-manufacture and risk-reduction process and will typically include testing of product filling methods, selection of packaging materials and determining the best printing technologies. Mock ups also enable the customer team to visualise artwork and finish.

picAs confidence grows and decisions for final product format are made, ITCM produces equipment for low-volume production of the product for more quantitative consumer testing and market trials. This equipment is typically semi-automated and will ensure that the products are representative of production in quality and function.

Animating the product and process

Animation adds another dimension to product design and is invaluable when mock-ups are not feasible or appropriate. 3-D models of the product can be manipulated allowing easy visualisation from all angles. Animation demonstrates how the product will function, including for example opening, dispensing and closing. These models can be easily shared with key decision makers to communicate the truly unique aspects of the new product.

picThe same principle is used to illustrate how the product will be manufactured. We use animated computer models of our machinery to give customers a better understanding of the process. This is very useful to support internal communication and decision making for capital projects. Models of risky process steps accompanied by the results from our technology proving provide customers with the confidence to proceed with new and innovative products and processes.
