Packaging ideas and concepts
ITCM supports clients by taking part in their innovation processes. We attend brainstorming sessions as an extension to the customer’s innovation team and facilitate these sessions if required. We bring fresh ideas and different points of view, drawing upon our experience across a wide range of industry sectors. Specific areas where we can add value include, for example, innovative closure features, re-sealability, novel carton formats, child-resistant and tamper-evident packaging as well as solutions for flexible packaging.
We have delivered a wide range of packaging innovations. Examples include novel carton designs for beverages and tobacco, hermetically sealed and recloseable packs for stay-fresh products, injection mouldings for personal care, new coffee and tea bag formats and solutions for anti-counterfeit and traceability. We are always looking for fresh product and package designs and enjoy sharing them with our customers.
‘Fast-to-fail’ product development
New ideas can come from anywhere and a business which is looking outside of its core competence will generate real advantage over those who remain inward-looking. In new product development, however, many good ideas are pursued for too long, diverting resources from the truly great ideas. This forms a large queue for design teams, lengthening the overall time to market for those products that ultimately enter production.
A key skill in ideation is therefore effectively filtering and evaluating ideas quickly – not in weeks but days. ITCM supports customers with this ranking and filtering process, assisting with decision making for selecting ideas to take to the next stage of development.
A similar philosophy should then apply to those ideas that are taken forward; At ITCM we support the ‘fast-to-fail’ approach to new product development. This involves the evaluation and testing of new concepts as quickly as possible, using rigorous criteria so that the hard decision to accept or reject an idea can be made without delay. This minimises R&D costs and frees up valuable resources to focus on those ideas that have the potential to reshape the market, generate growth and increase profitability for the business.
