Powder Dosing and Filling Equipment

ITCM are specialists in the design of precision powder dosing machines developed for the dosing and filling of powders, granules and infusion products. We are particularly skilled at working with difficult to handle substances such as those which are sticky and highly cohesive or fine and delicate. We also specialise in maintaining a uniform mixture for products that tend to segregate during processing. We have significant experience with pharmaceuticals powder handling and packaging with products such as multi-dose powder inhalers (mDPI’s) and dry powder reservoir inhalers (DPI’s), analgesics, black, green and herbal teas, coffee, food ingredients and many others.

Powder Dosing

We understand that the same dosing method is not suitable for all products. A vital element of our work is studying product characteristics and behaviour, e.g. using leading powder characterisation techniques. Our rigorous approach to laboratory sampling and bench testing helps determine the tolerances of the product and identifies the ideal process parameters and operating ranges to use in designing a versatile dosing system for the manufacturing environment. The impact of product variation on key processing steps will be quantified to ensure a robust manufacturing process and high production yield. If for example a controlled environment for humidity in the dosing suite is necessary, then this requirement will form part of the design early on.

Inhaler Dosing & Filling Machines

ITCM has many years’ experience in the production and assembly of individual blister inhaler filling machinery, working extensively with multi-dose reservoir and multi-unit inhaler devices (DPI’s and mDPI’s).  Upon a deep inhalation of breath, the dry powder inhaler delivers measured doses of extremely fine powder directly to the lungs.  Therefore, precision inhaler dosing and filling equipment is imperative to correctly dispense and package the exact drug dosage required.

Precision powder dosing machines

We are recognised as a global leader in the development of new and novel solutions for precision powder dosing and handling systems. Our expertise lie in the ability to dose over a wide range of weights and ingredient characteristics. We have developed powder dosing equipment processes for micro-dose weights from 1.00mg – 20.00mg for precise pharmaceutical processes. Other applications include fill weights ranging from 2g – 1000g for analgesics, coffee, tea, chocolate and other food products.

ITCM has also developed powder dosing machines for the continuous blending and dispensing of ingredients providing solutions to significantly reduce cycle times and in-process inventory.

Delicate powder handling

We have experience handling delicate powders and ensuring product integrity throughout the dosing process. Maintaining the chemical structure of the product is essential. Active ingredients are often fragile and need to be stabilized with an excipient, or inactive ingredient. Sometimes the bond to the excipient is fragile, calling for very careful handling of the product. For example, excess shaking, large impacts or compressions can cause serious damage to these powders, often rendering the active ingredient ineffective.   ITCM is familiar with these challenges and provide powder filling equipment that is sensitive to these fragile chemicals and specialised ingredients.  We work closely with our customers to ensure that their products reach the consumer in perfect condition.

Maintaining the proper mixture of ingredients is also key.  Products with multiple powders and differing particle sizes and weights tend to separate during processing. For these products the mixture in each dose is critical. ITCM is familiar with handling these products, delivering powder filling machines that maintain uniformity and ensure consistent proportions in each dose.
